Now is the time of the year to clean up WordPress site for better performance and security. One of the easiest ways would be to remove unused plugins and themes.

It is very easy for a site to have several inactive plugins on it. This could happen when plugins have been replaced with better-coded plugins, but the original plugins were not deleted on the site.

Also if you have been testing plugins on a site for a specific feature but then the plugin is left on the site and not deleted.

Why Remove Inactive Plugins?

Removing inactive plugins that are unused on your site also mean fewer plugins that needs to update as well as having fewer plugins that could be a potential attack vector on your site.

Well-structured plugins would remove the data that they added to the site’s database when they are uninstalled but a number of plugins will leave behind a number of customer database tables and Options values.

But if you are a MainWP user, you can use the WordPress Maintenance Extension to remove unused data from all of your connected (Child) sites at once to clean up WordPress site.

Remove Inactive Themes

The same goes for inactive themes on your site that were either used before for the active theme or were themes that were tested. Fewer themes also mean fewer themes that require to be kept updated on the site.

It is recommended to keep one of the default themes installed in WordPress core as a default fallback in the event that the active theme has an update that causes a fatal error on the site.

Disable Debugging by Default

Also, check that debugging has not been left on the site which could lead to a large debug log file being stored on the site. Debugging is only ideally enabled on a site if the site has a critical error on it.

Use Cloud Storage Instead of Local Backups

If you are using a backup plugin on your site then make sure it is using cloud storage for the backup files and they are not being locally stored. Since locally stored backup can end up causing considerable disk usage on your site’s server.

If you are a MainWP user, you can integrate cloud storage backup solutions such as WPVivid, Time Capsule, UpdraftPlus etc.

Remove Other Files

Also, check that native site build files like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator files are not being stored on the site server. Check for MySQL dump files, backup storage tar, or zip files. Remove as much file bloat from your sites’ server and it will keep disk storage usage down.

All of these steps will help to clean up WordPress site and keep a lot of bloats off from your site’s server.
